Most graphic novels are really the literary equivalent of short stories, or novellas; ie. not much content and turns on a minor plot. Asterios Polyp is more on the novella side. Although some of the themes and allusions are fairly plainly laid out, the execution is really beautiful. Not all the ideas are original, but the design work is really well-thought out and great to look at. Basically, it's a character study of an academic architect who is caught up in Structuralist thinking. Through losing his home to a freak accident, he begins to view life with more complexity and nuance. Great graphics.
