Henry James - you are awful. I will spend no more of my life reading you. What is the point?

Gemma You have to read the earlier stuff! Washington Square, or The Europeans.

Maria Like, whatever.
Huh.

message 3: by Paul (new)

Paul I really liked What Maisie Knew, a very vicious novel, and the earlier stuff is quite jolly and light, and The Turn of the Screw is essential, but I think anyone who's got though The Golden Bowl without dying of asphyxiation deserves a medal on which there should be a tiny picture of HJ saying "your duty to literature is now fulfilled"

message 4: by Jessica (new)

Jessica SERIOUSLY! Henry James is like one of those guys who started out making great, catchy three minute rock n' roll songs, but later in his career got waaaaaay too into psychadelics and esoteric eastern spirituality, and wound up recording incomprehensible six-hour concept albums with electronic instruments and no lyrics.

Don't write off the young James for what he ultimately became!

Maria Ok, ok. I will try the earlier stuff.
I promise.
Watch this space!!
