Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit is a very funny, insightful, and thought provoking novelized memoir. Winterson recounts her experiences growing up under her mother’s puritanical rule, praising Jesus and condemning the infidels – who are most everyone else. It is in this environment where Jeanette also happens to realize her relatively unorthodox sexual orientation which, as you can imagine, goes over like the devil himself. Winterson brilliantly negotiates the line between being hyper-critical and mean-spirited toward her mother and remaining honest with herself in a way that stirs sympathy for the (often) naïve sensibilities of this endearing young lady.
