Forever was a book I heard a lot about and felt compelled to read. It chronicles Katherine’s senior year and important decisions that come with it. She has met Michael, a boy who sweeps her off her feet. She is not naïve but is still a virgin. After thinking it through, she sleeps with Michael. They become closer and closer as a result, until they’re almost inseparable. Katherine’s parents begin questioning the relationship. Following her senior year, they force her to take a counseling position at a summer camp- in hope of simmering the relationship. Katherine and Michael correspond, and finally Michael surprises her by coming to camp. The usual spark is not there though, and a huge fight ensues. The relationship is abruptly over. Katherine is ready to move on.

This is not exactly a teachable book, to say the least. It is very graphic in its sexual descriptions. I probably won’t be putting it on my student book shelf. I might recommend it to certain students, but even that’s questionable. Forever is a well-written book that realistically depicts teenage sex, but it deals with such a controversial issue. I could see angry parents as a result of their middle-school student reading this book.
