In this reader's advisory, author Beverly Darnall takes former First Lady Laura Bush's list of 57 great books for families and children and provides a brief synopsis, themes and thoughts on the themes in addition to suggestions to enrich the reading time for each book. The books are broken down into four categories "Family Reading", "Books to Read to and with Young Children", "Books for Intermediate and Independent Readers" and "Special Comfort Books".

I found the books suggested by Mrs. Bush to be sadly outdated. I am all for reading the classics but she tended to dwell on books 20+ years old. I also noticed a distinct lack of cultural diversity, I think this was a side-effect of sticking to the "classics". There were a hand full of what seemed to be token diversity books.

As a librarian and First Lady Laura Bush brought much needed attention to public libraries during her husband's time in office, though I am disappointed in her must read list.
