I read this book when I was a student at West Jr. High. I did not have to read it but did so because I was interested in the story. I was unaware of all the symbolism that was supposed to be connected with the story. For me it was about a man who was really ticked off with a whale that at one time had bitten off his leg. It was also about a whale that was really ticked off because this looney man was chasing him all over the ocean sticking a harpoon into him. That is all I got out of the book at that time but I enjoyed it just the same. Maybe me being oblivious about what it was "really about" enabled me to enjoy it.

Ron I read this book many years ago when I was at West Jr. High School. I enjoyed it and at that time did not realize it was a classic. I read it for fun and did not realize there was supposed to be much symbolism in the story. I just thought it was about a man who was very ticked off because the whale bit off his leg and the whale was also ticked off because the man kept following him around poking him with a harpoon. I think it is a better story this way
