After reading a couple of chapters of this book, I turned to my husband and asked, "Is this book about mental illness?" as every character in this book just seemed to be batshit INSANE. But as it turns out, that's the beauty of Wise Blood. You'll never meet characters in any other novel as infuriating and unique as the lot you meet in this book. They're all nuts, but you'll understand - and maybe even like - them, because O'Conner sure does. I appreciated her sharp observations and dark sense of humor, and I'll never forget the Church of Christ Without Christ. The name alone is awesome.
