** spoiler alert ** A good book, even a very good book in spots. But the ending is hard in a way you wish it wasn't, even if it looks like the only option left.

As you read, you're forced to think about race, gender, sexuality in ways that could be distinctly uncomfortable. Some of this is deliberate, and some of it is heavy-handed -- the early chapters, especially, tend toward too obviously contrasting Connie's life with what appears to be the utopian future alternative.

It's the kind of book that I like too much to get rid of, but don't like enough to re-read it often. I think this is only the third time I've read it, including during the class I needed it for.
