Faye Kellerman writes an entertaining page-turner every time - she is one of my favorites. I took a star away from her because like so many novelists I've read lately she describes people of color as "mocha", "mocha with cream" and "cafe au lait". If it is necessary to the story to mention a character's race or ethnic heritage (and I admit that it sometimes is) could we describe them without resorting to coffee drinks? Or should all caucasians in the book be decribed as being the color of "2% milk", or "eggnog" or perhaps "a vanilla shake"?
