Okay, I haven't read this in a little over 10 years. It still holds.

There were definitely parts that went on a little too long -- it took the hobbits so long to get to Rivendell. And there were parts that flew -- Gandalf's battle with the Barlog.
-- side note on the Gandalf/Barlog battle -- when I worked at AVH, we had a couple from England who attended the parish where Tolkien's son was vicar. They were friendly with the son and got to know the father, JRR, such that one time they let him watch their young son. Later, when the boy was older and they were reading this book to him, they got to Gandalf vs. Barlog. After they got past that part, he told them that there was more about what happens to the grey wizard. He couldn't remember what, but he knew there was more to the story...

Well, on to the Two Towers.
