I read Deep End of the Ocean years ago and really enjoyed it. This book is a follow-up to that novel, allowing the reader to see what happened to the family that was ripped apart by child abduction twenty years earlier.

I was disappointed by this novel in many ways. I thought that understanding the characters and their motivations required remembering a lot of detail from the previous book (and I did not). I also thought that the plot was silly --- the child who was abducted in the first book has his own baby abducted in this book. And there is unrealistic police action and some goofy writing like, "I avenge you with my every breath."

Interestingly, I found the last chapter to be really compelling. If only the novel could have started with that final section!
