it was ok

My main gripe with this book is that it could have been pretty good, but it wasn't.

First of all, Mr. Oliver fails as the ultimate scary vampire. He is mildly manipulative, but doesn't come across as all that powerful. The most powerful act he does is stand next to sunlight. Not particularly frightening. He doesn't even have control on his underlings. He is the most powerful vampire on earth and he's forced to live as a nomad? He's too vulnerable at the end and is easily staked with Anita's "Ha! Ha! I tricked you!" move. It isn't until later books that we learn how really powerful he is. It doesn't have the same effect that way.

Second, if any of the band of vampires had their own novel, it might be decent. (In fact, novels 10-14 really could have used them.) I liked Alejandro and the child vampire is creepy - especially when acting as a decoy. But I felt as if Anita was being pulled from one to another with none of them being developed. The whole plot came across as slightly scattered.

The werewolf thing was a little obvious. "Hi, I'm hanging out with a master vampire as a random, normal human." No, really?

The rookie biting it? Oh, please tell me she didn't write that.

Otherwise, the action scenes were interesting and made for good brain-candy. I just felt as if they were barely strung together.
