I picked this up off one of my bookshelves on a whim - I was on my way out and needed something to take with me quickly.

It's been a while since I read this, and I remembered it as being more engrossing than it turned out to be. This took me a while to get through, although I have been a busy bee at the same time, so maybe I need to cut it a little slack.

The book has three different story strands, but unlike Pulp Fiction there is little interaction between the strands until the denouement.

Having said that, the tying up of the strands is done very effectively and the characters are engaging, if not particularly likeable.

As usual, with Iain Banks, there are some icky moments and some nice little twists and set pieces which give you real pause for thought.
