A great time-travel book! Dana is a 26 year-old black woman living in LA in 1979. She gets called back in time when one of her ancestors is at risk of dying. The story jumps between 1979 and the pre-Civil War South.

Needless to say Dana has some adjusting to do to try to wrap her head around being thought of and treated like a slave. There are many scenes for brutality carried out against the slaves. The scenes aren't gratuitous, and serve to illustrate the horrors of that era.

I had heard great things about this book. This book lived up to the recommendations. It was an engrossing book that I read in about three days.
