Alyson (Kid Lit Frenzy) Kate Messner does a fantastic job of capturing the various emotions of a family as they struggle to come to terms with nonna's (grandmother) memory loss. The story is told from the perspective of 12 year old Gianna who loves to run, draw, and dream and who has a special connection to her grandmother. As Gianna struggles to complete a science project by the deadline in order to be able to run in Sectionals, life repeatedly gets in the way. However, her struggle to complete the project in a manner that truly reflects who she is evolves into the backdrop for dealing with her grandmother's illness.

Messner captures a northeastern fall, family life, and school friendships with great authenticity. My only question came in that Gianna's voice seemed older than 12 years especially in light of her personality which is more of the creative free-flowing type rather than the "grow up before your time" type.
