Amélie Nothomb writes 3.7 novels annually. She publishes one each autumn, then she collects book awards the following January. She plays by the book, this one. Her writing, on the other hand, is full of electric contradictions: her sentences stretch and play with the French language, her observations are sharp and acidic, her voice is that of a candid storyteller, and her premises often come from her unusual life experience.

"Ni d'Eve, ni d'Adam" chronicles her time as a 21-year-old in Japan, studying spoken Japanese and dating a sensitive, meticulous, loving young man. Their mutual affection, their adventures throughout Japan, and her confused impulse to flee from him, are presented here free of moralizing, free of sentiment. I couldn't stop reading it.

This edition is beautifully designed, too. I love Nothomb's signature goofy author portraits.
