This is a really weird book to talk about. The premise is neat.

Jayne Heller receives word that her Uncle Eric has died and she goes to settle his estate, discovering that she has inherited a vast amount of wealth. She also discovers that he battled the forces of darkness for his fortunes. The dark wizards and rider demons he took on seem to have it out for Jayne too, particularly a man named Coin, who is responsible for the death of her Uncle. Now it becomes do or die, flee to an island for life, or take out the baddie.

Sounds neat right? It is, and it's a fun read...but it's hard to talk about because so much is character driven and "Oh, you had to be there" to get what is going on in this book. Hanover really fleshes out the people in the book so that the overall simple premise really feels like more than it is. This isn't a bad thing, but it's hard to talk about a book with a simple premise and make it sound amazing or dramatic when it's more about interactions between the people. You really do get swept up in the 8 or 10 people's lives... you just don't know quite why, other than seeing them all survive immenent doom and despair.

Overall impressions...I intend to pick up the sequel as soon as I am done typing here... if that tells you anything. I'm intrigued to see what else HAnover has in store for Jayne and co.
