Beautiful story, with intense, well-developed characters. Gaskell hovers in-between Dickens and the Bronte sisters, with the social commentary of the former and the psychological development of characters and their interactions of the latter.

I feel as though this an important book to read in the context of recent discussions of capitalism, globalism, and the role of the government and other entities in the alleviation of poverty. It brings up difficult questions, and leaves you a little uneasy about the best solutions to the problems of industrialization (it's not preachy or over-simplified).
