This represents a sound overview of travel in Northern Italy. The Lonely Planet series is, overall, a good resource for would-be travelers. And this volume is another nice addition to that series.

The focus? Northern Italy. This includes Venice (and the region around Venice), Friuli-Venezia Giulia (including Trieste and the surrounding region), Trentino-Alto Adige (Trento, Bolzano, Merano, and other venues within the region), Lombardy and the Lakes (Milan and the region as well as the Lakes), and Liguria, Piedmont, and Valle d'Aosta.

Let's take a couple examples to illustrate what the guide includes.

Venice. The coverage begins with this statement (page 58): “Venice defies description. . . .[N:]o theme park creator could ever have come up with this result of 1400 years of extraordinary history.” As with other cities, this begins with context—history and basic information. Then, sights: The Grand Canal, the Basilica di San Marco, and on it goes. This unique city is described nicely here, with the potential visitor getting useful information about what to see and where to stay.

Lombardy and the Lakes. The centerpiece of this region is Milan. Some of the sights of the city: The Duomo, the opera hall of La Scala, da Vinci’s “The Last Supper,” the old Sforza Castle (Castello Sforzesco), and so on. Places to eat and sleep are listed, as well as bars and clubs for entertainment. A number of maps are provided (with print a wee bit too small to be helpful for me). The Lakes are also discussed—Lake Como, Lake d’Orta, Make Maggiore, and Lake Garda.

All in all, a solid travel guide for those who would like to explore Northern Italy. While there is not a lengthy listing of places to eat and stay from region to region, there is enough there to help out.
