I guess this book isn't my cup of tea after all.
I loved the beginning and the ending, but the middle was a complete let down for me. I expected to see Merlin, a magician. But all I got was Merlin, an engineer...
Furthermore, I just couldn't help compare this book to "The Mists of Avalon". I remember clearly, how "The Mists" gripped my whole attention from the very first page and "The Crystal Cave" just couldn't accomplish that. It doesn't mean, that the book, written by Mary Stewart, is a second-rate one, it just means, I think, that I'm more of a Morgaine person ;)

Ronyell Great review Aredhel!!! Merlin the engineer??? That sounds so weird...

Aredhel Thank you, Ronyell :))
Yeah, Merlin in this book (and I really hope that it's the case with this book alone, and not with the other books of the series) is more like a medieval engineer and a prophet, than a magician. It's rather refreshing, but I just didn't see that coming! And, well, I just wanted some magic :)))

Ronyell Yeah! Every time I heard about Merlin, I always wanted him to do the amazing magic tricks that he always did in front of King Arthur! Was King Arthur and Lancelot featured in this book?

Aredhel Nope :) No King Arthur and Lancelot in this one. However, Arthur is due to be born in the next book.
This book tells Merlin's story - the story of his childhood and his youth. The second book (as I see it) will be devoted to Arthur's tender years, and maybe the third book will feature all the characters that we know so well. Though I can't bring myself to read the rest of the series ((:

Ronyell Hmm...that sounds great, but the way Merlin is shown as a engineer, I don't think either of us want to read the rest of the series! :)
