Rachel Kushner's mother was raised in pre-Castro Cuba in the American enclave where this book takes place. Kushner captures the essence of what it was like to live in Cuba during this time and then be forced out into a life changed by revolution. She focuses on the Americans sent there to manage the cane industry and mining efforts and how they lived a life of privilege on foreign soil. From Batista to Castro -- after reading this book you can see how easily the Cuban people welcomed change.
