This book isn't all bad, or I wouldn't have made it through its 500+ pages. It starts out pretty much insufferable, and makes its way through an intriguing/suspenseful patch that keeps you turning the pages, all the way to the completely preposterous ending. Recommended if there's nothing else lying around, but not to be sought out.

This book also scratches a little pet peeve of mine, which is that the author has made her main character so blindingly brilliant, well-read, and erudite, that she, as a writer, cannot do justice to her. For instance, I find typos and poor punctuation somewhat irksome in any book that I read, but when you're supposed to be reading the words of a certifiable genius who's read the bulk of the Western canon and can "recite pi to 65 decimal places," they just completely pull you out of any suspension of disbelief you might have worked up (and trust me, you'll need a lot for this book).
