For those of you that enjoy Alex Rider books, “The Recruit” is a grittier version. Even though there are some improbable elements, like kids being recruited for MI-6, the author realistically portrays the life of the recruits and the worlds they infiltrate. What’s so great about James is that he has plenty of flaws, but overcomes them with hard work, which doesn’t come easy for him. He also has to learn to just his fellow recruits. The 100 days of boot camp was hard to read at time, but it bonded the reader with the characters as much as the characters bonded with each other. I definitely recommend the Cherub Series (six in the series so far) for upper middle school and high schoolers who want a convincing portrayal of the seedy world of espionage.
