Set in the 1940s, this story is based on author Ruth White's childhood in a Virginia coal mining camp. Dad is a drunk, mom escapes "into her head" and Audrey and her sisters are dirty and hungry. A wonderful teacher provides hope and by the end, we know that Audrey will make it. Sad, touching and another entry for the "you think you've got it rough, kid?" shelf.
