Dreiser gets a bad rap. He's derisively called a naturalist, which implies his characters are only prisoners of their circumstances. In reality, though, he is a gripping story-teller who lets the story unfold as characters meet each circumstance as if they have full agency -- but they only have so much say in how they meet their fates. His characters are complex and because he was a reporter he has an incredible way of analyzing a situation with grace and simplicity.

Sometimes freedom doesn't mean a thing and dreams are more precious than success. Is this the "Great American Novel" people used to talk about?
