Wife just read this and enjoyed it. She thought of me since I had just been to Shanghai during May of this year. Very enjoyable! Well written and easy to read. Story of an NPR correspondent for China who takes a last trip before leaving for home and a new assignment (England). The trip is take highway 312 which runs from Shanghai through China to the northwest corner of the country. Along the way he talks with people he meets along the road, in the fields, on buses, wherever he finds them. He tours some interesting side sites. And all along the journey he weaves in historical perspectives. If you have a curiosity of China, this is an easy venture.
