(This is a review of the audiobook). Lucy Scarborough is a 17-year-old girl with two very big problems. Number one: She is a soon-to-be teenage mom facing her senior year of high school. Uh oh. But wait, number two: Her family was cursed by an Elfin Knight many centuries ago, causing all Scarborough women to go insane upon childbirth. What? Yep. Now Lucy must break the centuries-old curse in order to escape the impending doom. But unlike her poor ancestors before her, Lucy is graced with endlessly-supportive foster parents and friends who love her and will help her fight to the end in order to break the curse.
The story was fairly enjoyable and kept my interest during a week of commuting, but it was by no means amazing. There were obvious holes and weaknesses in the plot, but it's hard to point fingers due to the mixing of two very different genres. "Impossible" is a problem novel (albeit tame) interwoven into an urban fantasy, so I give the author credit for that challenge. There are elements of the plot that are so unrealistic, but while some can be attributed to the fantasy components, others are just corny and/or underdeveloped. The love story is exceptionally saccharine (and yes, ridiculous to an older jaded gal like myself), but I'm sure many teenage girls will eat it up with a Twilight-brand spoon.
In regards to the audiobook production, I wasn't a huge fan of the performer Emily Durante's reading style. Her voice is high-pitched and "breathy", and her vocal characterizations of the male roles in particular were silly and somewhat inconsistent throughout the story. Also, while the ballad "Scarborough Fair" is an important part of the story and is appropriately featured on the discs, I assure you that you are going to be sorely sick of it by the end due to the same repetitive instrumental interludes at the beginning and end of each disk.
