I had some trouble with this book. There was too much flash back and not enough of the main character. Or perhaps it is better to say the story perports to be about the granddaughter, but her story is not really told until the last 50 pages. The insights in to 4 generations of women dealing with 4 major women's movements...abolition of slavery, temperance movement, women's right to vote and prohibition and how they were interrelated was a little too much for one book. It just didn't quite work.
