When I wrote about the first two Hellboy trades, I was pretty ambivalent about Mike Mignola's drawing style. After reading this volume, I've come around to thinking that his art is excellent for the type of stories he writes. It sort of reminds me of stained glass windows or Medieval iconography. I wouldn't like it on, say, Captain America, but for gothic stories tinged with dread and ancient evils, it's perfect.

This book also moves away from the uberplot that filled the first two trades. Instead, it focuses on stand-alone adventures from Hellboy's years working for the B.P.R.D. Most of these stories are inspired by real legends and folklore, which makes me adore Mignola all the more.

I also wrote an article on Hellboy for Guys Lit Wire. Check it out here.
