A terrific book. Esperanza is a young Latina growing up in Chicago. She longs to have something that is hers, not the house on Mango Street, not what the world tells she has to accept. She shares her dreams and longings in a series of first person vignettes and through them we see Esperanza reaching for something more. She shares pictures of her family, friends, and neighbors, and we catch glimpses of the person she's hoping to become. The writing is luscious, and ripe, and glows with her personality.
