Jacoby's work gave me a more solid foundation for understanding the political chasm that has apparently opened in the US over health care reform, even though the book is very little about issues du jour. Jacoby details the converging influences which have led the US to its current anti-rational, anti-intellectual state: from pseudo-science and junk thought to the culture of distraction, lack of respect for reading and learning, and the way we look to fools rather than grand men and women to form our intellectual standards.
