2.5 stars, rounded up to a very, very, very generous 3-star rating.

Waking The Witch is an installment of the Women of the Otherworld series that I don't see myself ever re-reading. This is sad because I had been looking forward to finally reading a Savannah book for a long time.

I remember Savannah a 12-year old spoiled, petulant girl and later a determined, brash, strong, sassy and refreshingly selfish woman and a powerful witch who hates authority, goes after what she wants, can kick ass, despises humans and whose only weakness is her girl crush on Adam. That's who she was as we saw her through the eyes of Paige, Jaime, Elena and other narrators of earlier Otherworld books and that's the way I loved her. The Savannah we get in this novel is pretty much a boring and timid Hope Adams clone who is apparently slightly depressed, has no spunk and no guts to actively pursue the man of her dreams preferring instead to settle for random hookups. Who is this woman? Let me tell you, not someone I care to read about. I expected this book to be about a young woman who would raise mayhem and unleash her super powers. I expected Savannah to go after Adam with all her determination and forces. I expected sparks to fly between the two. No luck here.

Now onto the plot itself. You know, I wonder why Armstrong started writing urban fantasy because it seems she prefers writing mysteries. I have nothing against mysteries per se, but if not grounded in paranormal, hers are weak. This book can be considered urban fantasy only because the main character is a witch. Otherwise, substitute cover spells with hiding in dark corners and knockback spells with a good kick, and there is nothing paranormal left in this story. The mystery itself is mediocre at best, because there is absolutely no way for readers to guess who the villain is. Speaking of the villain, the villain's motivation makes hardly any sense, the final result can be achieved much easier without this convoluted plan and murders.

Some readers also mention the cliff-hanger ending. Yes, there is one, but it is lame and unnecessary IMO. It surely won't make me lose my sleep.

To sum it up, Waking The Witch is a throwaway addition to the series - the mystery is lame, the narrator is boring, and romance is non-existent. But somehow it is written better than the majority of new UF and this is the only excuse for my very generous rating.

Kat Kennedy I don't think I'll ever get around to reading the rest of this series :( it's such a shame because Bitten was so absolutely awesome!

Tatiana I recommend reading Frostbitten though, even if you skip the rest of the books in the series.

AH Kat, if you like Elena and Clay - you can read in this order (and it won't matter if you skip) - Bitten, Stolen, Broken, Frostbitten.
There is also Men of the Otherworld which tells you all about Clay.

Dominika looks like a good hint for me, too :)

AH Sometimes it pays to skip around.

Kat Kennedy Thanks AH - I've decided to follow your reading scheme and I'm reading Frostbitten now!

AH It really does make more sense that way. I remember when I looked at Kelley Armstrong's list of books and just being confused at her order (order she wrote them, I guess). Frostbitten was really exciting and it gives you some clues on Elena's background - very subtle - watch for it.

Kat Kennedy Her background other than being an orphan who was passed from foster home to foster home whilst being abused? There's MORE?!

AH It's very subtle - When you finish reading, tell me what you think. It has something to do with women NOT being weres.

Kat Kennedy *Gasps* You know I'll be devestated if I don't pick up this subtle hint! It'll be the end of me and I'll suddenly realize what's it's like to "not read properly" which Tatiana apparently does all the time.

message 11: by AH (new) - rated it 4 stars

AH It's very subtle. I hope she develops it for the next book.

ALPHAreader "I expected Savannah to go after Adam with all her determination and forces. I expected sparks to fly between the two. No luck here. "

Totally agree!
Considering that all the other 'Otherworld' books have a heavy romance element, I was surprised by how tame the wild Savannah was in 'Waking'. But then I found out that book's #12 and #13 will also be narrated by Savannah... and I got to thinking that maybe Ms. Armstrong has a slow-burning romance in mind for these two?

AH She grew up with Adam. I think Adam always saw her as a little sister, but he is slowly seeing that she grew up into a beautiful woman. Also Savannah did have a love interest in this book. It would be weird for her to jump right away to Adam without a few minutes of mourning, right?

Wicked Incognito Now It always bothers me to skip books, but I'm just not into the other POV's in this series. I only want Elena and Clay. But I grew really bored of Broken, stopped reading it, and haven't picked it up since.

Do you think I could skip straight to Frostbitten without being confused by all the interim storylines?

AH I read the series out of order and personally, it made way more sense that way. Frostbitten is better, there is more action, mostly Elena and Clay, very little Jeremy.

Tatiana April, I think you can jump straight to Frostbitten. It's a pretty independent book. If you have any questions, you can always ask me or AH:)

Wicked Incognito Now Alrighty then! I will.

ALPHAreader @ April - You might just want to read the very last chapter of 'Broken'... because something kind of big happens there, without really relating to the rest of the story. The chapter is entitled 'News'.

Wicked Incognito Now Oh, okay. I'll do that. Thanks for the heads up!

Wendy B Great review, and I'm not surprised to hear that this was a disappointment. The last of the series I read was about Hope and disliked it very much because of the character which was as boring as you describe of Savannah (how unfortunate that the once fiery child turns into this). I also read about Jamie Vegas and liked it, but probably just because I like Jeremy. Glad to hear that Frostbitten is back on track with Elena and Clay (Broken was also disappointing).

Tatiana Frostbitten is definitely worth reading, Wendyb.

Penny Hey, I just purchased Spell Bound, the next book in the series, and I just realized I have zero recollection as to how the last book ended. I remember who the villain was--that demon woman from Dime Store Magic--but I don't remember what non-event happened in the epilogue. Could you fill me in?

Rafael Toscano I just want to know if there is a sequel to Waking The Witch ? I want to know what happened to Kayla and her Gramma...

Sara I don't agree with this review at all. Everything that seems to annoy this reader I enjoyed, to me this book goes to show how grown up Savannah become but also how every much she is still a young adult still learning.

I loved the focus on the mystery than the actual romance and I love that Kelley Armstrong focuses more on the adventure or mystery than the romance. If you want romance read Mills and Boon.

Also I loved the mystery itself, it's not obvious at all who the villain is, I would never have guessed in a million years who it was (I don't want to spoil it for those that haven't read it yet) and well if I continue now I think I might spoil it.

Overall though I thought it was a great addition to the series.
