When Deborah St James was a young adult in California, she was very close to her roommate China Rivers. However, she failed to keep in touch when she returned to England. Now, China's brother has appeared at the St James' doorstep to request their help in getting China out of jail on Guernsey where she is being held on suspicion of murdering the local philanthropist. Deborah and Simon manage to get her out on bail but evidence still leads to one of the Rivers being the culprit and Deborah is alienated from Simon as he keeps urging her to look at the evidence separate from her friendship.
