A reasonably bright twelve-year old could write better than this. Breaks almost every rule in the book, most painfully (and continuously!) "show don't tell". I'm amazed and appalled that this not only got published, but that Irvine was also apparently paid to produce sequels.

Asgar It is quite astonishing to think that books like this are on the market, when Erikson took almost 10 years of persistence just to get Gardens published.

Robert Unfortunately a lot of people like fantasy which is long and unchallenging - it helps them get through their tedious life without having to think too much. All genres of popular culture are filled with this kind of mush.

Taygus "it helps them get through their tedious life without having to think too much" Your comment makes it sound like it's something to be ashamed of. There's nothing wrong with enjoying something that you don't have to think much over.
