I think the whole point that Almond was aiming for was that there are moments in one's life that are going to be great and ones that aren't so great. But no matter what, they enrich who you are and you learn from them.
He writes about his extreme dislike for the Red Sox even though he resides in Boston and how he and his father always related on their love for the Oakland A's. He reveals his first sexual experience and how he met the love of his life years later. But the best part was how he was willing to share the experience of his wife's pregnancy and the birth of their daughter, and everything that goes along with it. He puts a humorous twist on it but you can also sense the pride and joy he has for his daughter.
There's much more than what I just described and I really recommend reading his book to find out what took place in his life that made him who he is today.
