** spoiler alert ** This is the final installment of the Keladry (Protector of the Small) series and Kel is now a full-fledged knight. Her assignment is to run a refugee camp rather than fight as she has shown a gift for being in command. Pierce does a good job of keeping Kel believable (as she falls in and out of love, develops crushes, etc.) and keeping her true to her roots (as she teaches civilians to fight, and goes after her kidnapped refugees even though it technically means treason).

The climactic fight scene did feel a bit rushed and the ending was rather abrupt (unusual for Pierce) but the book was already very long and it was nice to leave a character to her life rather than have it wrapped up for us with a bow. It would be neat to see Kel come up as a side character in another book (much like Alanna is in this series) to see if she continues to do well.
