This is a detective story - don't believe the book description. "Suspense, fear and the supernatural" really have very little to do with The Purloined Letter. In reality, it's a short detective tale, using rational thought to solve a crime. Written a good 50 years before Sherlock Holmes, this short story is considered to be the grandfather of the modern detective story. The amateur detective uses observation, reasoning and some sly cunning to solve the crime, much to the chagrin of the police prefect. The short lesson is that you must size up and step into your villain's shoes/envelope to solve the crime.
