Often the second book of a trilogy can drag. Definitely NOT the case with this's packed with action, suspense, and drama. And it's even darker than the first book, though just as good if not better. Pullman does an excellent job of advancing the overall plot with this book, while keeping things interesting enough that this book is enjoyable in its own right.
