The follow up to the Mysterious Benedict Society is better than the first. The thoughts and feelings of Reynie Muldoon are not the sole focus of the narration and so the other characters are flushed out. The characters, especially Constance, are developing in a variety of ways (emotionally, intellectually, physically) that add depth. The plot line is not as good, but the chase the kids are led on is entertaining and interesting and my favorite thing about these books is that the reader can figure out the clues along with the kids. The adult interventions that happen in the book are well placed so the kids are able to be independent and competent at the same time that they are supported and cared for. I think this book contains good lessons about loyalty, support, leadership, and group process. And it's not perfect.
