Just when you think a children’s press has given you the ultimate wow, there comes from its list a picture book with so many fine qualities you want to tell everyone you know about it. This abecedario, written and illustrated by rising Los Angeles artist José Lozano, bounces through the alphabet with an energy that exudes the diversity of a bustling barrio. Laid out like a photo album, each gouache “snapshot” shows us a new character in the neighborhood. The alliterative text introduces bakers, artists, shoppers and shopkeepers, dancers and musicians, and children with varying interests. Kids will laugh out loud at Sammy and spunky Silvia, as well as the other richly painted personages who populate this book. The Spanish text is every bit as crisp and delicious as the original, making this book an “apple” worthy of much more than a single turn. Thank you, Lozano and Cinco Puntos, for a brilliant bilingual winner!
