This is one of the "Parker" books by Richard Stark, which I've always heard good things about. The writing was first-rate, the plot nice and textured, but I don't like Parker -- admire his cold-blooded professionalism, yes, but I don't like him. All other characters are pretty one-dimensional, just there for plot advancement. Anyway, I don't mind empty calories and could have liked this a lot more, but it ended as a @#$ cliff-hanger! I just wasn't prepared for it to be a cliff-hanger, and I was really ticked off at the end of the book. Sucker that I am, I read the next one, Ask The Parrot, which picks up where this left off, but it too ends without resolution. Again, writing is deft, but I don't like Parker, and I don't like books that don't end with some resolution -- can be satisfactory or unsatisfactory, but I want an ending!
