Robin McKinely disappointed me with this book. The first person narrative of "Jake" is extremley rambling, distracting, off-point, and confusing. He may begin a thought on a page, digress for three pages, and then come back to the original thought. Early eighteenth century litreature was clearer than this was. I found myself skimming and then skipping many pages of the book. The ending was also very anticlimatic. If you're coming at this book from the McKinley-fan-perspective, be warned that it is nothing like her earlier novels.
