Everyone! You should at least read this once.
Read in September, 2009, read count: Lots
It was lovely to read this book again after so many years. I originally studied it at school and felt that I'd analysed every word so closely that the book completely lost its meaning. This time around it was a pleasure to read.
Scout's narrative is lovely and has a certain innocence about it that I definitely wish I could return to. You forget how black and white the world is when you're a child.
From discussing the book in my book club I came to realise how naive my generation is to the racial tension that went on in those days. The racism in To Kill a Mockingbird seems completely alien to me. I definitely want to learn more about it and plan on reading The Help in the near future. This was our other book club read for this month.
I would definitely recommend returning to this one if school put you off it. It was a pleasure to read and one that I am sure I will read again and again.
'Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird.'
