The literary reviews of this book are so over the top, I wish I had liked it more.

This book tells the story of Philip Bowman, a WWII veteran who comes home to NYC and settles into life as a book editor. He ultimately has a long and successful career, and I was hoping for a glimpse into literary life in NYC circa 1950's...and there are some, but the book was more about Philip's loves and losses...again and again. We see him go through young love and a disappointing marriage on to many affairs, experiencing betrayal, ennui, revenge and some pretty good sex...though the scenes are brief, it's some of the most erotic literary sex I've ever read! Ultimately everything fades for Philip.

This book is a little slow moving until the second half...and there never is alot of drama. What I liked most about this book was the writing. I kept reading, not so much for the story, but for those exquisite sentences I expect from great literary writers.
