really liked it

I read this book in the beginning of August when it was dreadfully hot and humid and I was learning to take care of an infant. It is thoroughly and comfortingly British, set shortly after World War I in the countryside. It has a calmness to it and the author writes some beautiful descriptions of being young during the summertime.

The main character is a war veteran who is trying to regain a sense of contentment by going to live in the British countryside while working to restore a medieval mural in an old church. He makes a lovely life for himself and doesn't want summer to end. The book is bittersweet and made me wistful for summers from my past.
