Hope I liked this book a lot at the beginning, but as the plot started taking shape, things really got out of control. It’s the kind of story no one really wants to read, but they can’t help but keep reading once they are committed. I wished so hard that Bone, the abused little girl antagonist, would find the love that her mother felt for her, but the longer her mother stayed with her abusive husband, the more depressing the book became. I could hear tires screeching for the last 200 pages while Bone and her mother’s lives swerved out of control and that is the part of the book that is still resounding in my ears. This is a book that I feel bad about recommending to a friend, because for all the beauty in it, it is still an extremely emotional journey. I did in fact loan it to a friend the day I finished it, but not before warning her that it was really tough stuff.
