Why do some books take 100 pages of reading through dull, boring text to get interesting?

That's what happened in this book for me. Aside from the random information about the zoo, and some cute quotes by Pi himself, there really wasn't much worth reading. Just a lot of set-up, and.. boy, does set-up bore me.

However, the story out on the ocean.. now that was fun and interesting! I couldn't put the book down! And the end.. what a twist.

As far as the religion thing goes with the book, I was hopeful that it wouldn't be preachy and make itself try to be more than it was. Unlike The Alchemist though, this book treated religion lightly and with good humor, while making some interesting and thought-provoking points. A fun read, but the first one hundred pages keep it from getting 4 stars from me.
