** spoiler alert ** Better than I remembered. I read this book in high school and didn't especially like it, so I decided to give it another try. Here's what I realized:

1. It's a dark comedy. The humor escaped me the first time 'round cuz I was too busy trying to figure out what the hell was going on so I wouldn't flunk the tests. Also, the story's so devastating that I thought it was a tragedy, when in fact it's so tragic it's funny. Nothing like a reeking, waterlogged coffin to crack me up!

2. Vardaman's a bit like Darl. Those of you who've read it might know what I'm talking about.

3. Anse Bundren (the dad) is HILARIOUSLY pathetic. Like, pathetic to the point of self-parody. The teeth? The money? Hilarious.

4. It's easier to appreciate a book when you're not staring at Susie Patterson's developing bosom.* The hideous morlocks on the R train are so unattractive that my gaze is focused like a laser beam. I wouldn't be surprised if I burned a hole through the pages WITH MY MIND.

Anyway... good book! Not great, but good.
