"They tell me you are a man with true grit," 14-year-old Mattie Ross of Yell County, Ark.,says to the one-eyed U.S. Marshall at Little Rock, Reuben J. (Rooster) Cogburn. And what is true grit? Well, true grit is when you are a 14-year-old girl and you shoot a dangerous outlaw and the recoil of your rifle knocks you backward into a pit and you are wedged in the pit and then you begin slipping backward into a cave and the cave is full of rattlesnakes - and you keep your wits about you -
With, "True Grit," Charles Portis wrote a masterpiece. Although the wonderful movie is better-known, the novel is (of course) even better than the film. When Mattie Ross sets out to tell her story, you become her fascinated friend nearly as soon as you are introduced. Mattie Ross is a singular, memorable, delightful American literary figure who tells her story with tickling wit.
