Harry spends his summer being terribly abused by the Dursleys (honestly, the Dursleys and their utter hatred for Harry are just over the top - I vaguely remember them getting a bit more human as the series goes on), and then heads back to Hogwarts, where people are being Petrified and messages about the Chamber of Secrets being opened are being daubed on the walls in blood. Drama.

Harry, Hermione and Ron slowly set about finding out more about the Chamber of Secrets, and we also spend a lot of time with them in lessons, particularly with the ludicrous new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher, fame-seeker Lockhart. We finish with a grand battle, and Hsrry directly battles Voldemort - or part of Voldemort - for the first time.
